Grim! A wicked night with persistent, drizzly rain throughout the second half. Sutton had few attempts on goal in the first half and none in the second half. Grimsby were lively, performing well above what their much lower league position would suggest. A grim performance and result from Sutton on a grim, Sutton night.
What a match! After 10 minutes I was convinced Sutton would get stuffed as they were made to look poor by the sharp passing of the visitors. It was goal-less at half-time and the visitors started the second half sharply. But minutes into the half Sutton scored and more or less wrapped up the game with a well taken breakaway with 5 minutes of normal time remaining. The applause from the home supporters was deafening. What a terrific game of football.
A poor first half for Sutton produced a goal for the visitors. An improved second half lead to two goals for Sutton, both scored in the last 5 minutes, resulting in an unexpected turnaround and result. The visitors felt that their goalkeeper had been fouled for Sutton’s first goal, but the ref disagreed. A bit of luck for Sutton, there!
It was good to be at an evening game again.
A fascinating and competitive first half and a subdued second half resulted in no goals. A useful point for Sutton but a disappointing result for promotion contenders Stevenage.

A fortunate goal scored direct from a corner was the difference between two poor teams. Pressure from Rochdale in the second half might have given them at least a draw, but it wasn’t to be. Without the goal it would have been a dire game, but instead it was just poor.
Still, it was good to be at a game again.
A disappointing result after a fascinatingly competitive match for the first hour. Sutton took a deserved lead in the 62nd minute but ruined their prospects with a player being red-carded 5 minutes later. Hanging on lasted until two goals from Salford, 10 and 3 minutes from full-time, ruined the party – it seemed inevitable with a one man advantage.
Sutton nearly nicked a point in the last minute of extra-time, but it wasn’t to be. Disappointing!
For 15 minutes Sutton were lively, but for the rest of the first half they seemed to lose the plot.
A cup of tea at halftime must have done the trick and they put away two goals for a deserved win.
I am enjoying watching them play!
Sutton 2 – 0 Hartlepool
Last year Sutton were the losing finalists in the Papa Johns Trophy competition – I was there to see the game at Wembley. Tonight they took the first step in this season’s competition with an enjoyable and deserved win over Chelsea U21.

My local library is quite small but I can usually manage to find something interesting. Today was no exception – two science books (my daughter would approve of The Knowledge, which is subtitled How to Rebuild Our World After an Apocalypse!), a novel about football and an American crime novel.
Yesterday I had a day out with my son and son-in-law to the final of the EFL Trophy at Wembley Stadium. My local team, Sutton United, were in action.
It was my first visit to the new stadium and what a magnificent place it is. I had been to the old stadium three times, I think, having watched a schoolboy’s international and a couple of dull (as I recall) full internationals. Other than these games and a match at Fulham (!) it was quite an experience being at an event involving a large crowd (30,000). The full capacity is 90,000!
In these Covid times I was grateful for having chosen good (ie more expensive) seats, so we were sat in a quite sparsely populated area of the stadium. Nevertheless it was impossible not to be in close contact with crowds of people within the general area of the stadium as well as on public transport. Fingers crossed that we remain virus free!
It was a good game and Sutton were unfortunate to have had victory snatched away in the 96th minute of the match. A pizza and a pint at a pub near Waterloo Station rounded off a wonderful day. Apart from the result.
An early goal but otherwise a dull first half, followed by a better second half and a cracker of a goal. But gosh, it was cold.

It’s been a long time since I last went to an evening football match. Sadly, Sutton were clearly the inferior team, and a grim, goalless second half ended a disappointing game and result. Still, it was fun to go to an evening match..
