Notes from a week away

Traveller hint #1: Before travelling, as well as checking if the trains are running / on time, it’s also worth checking that the underground line you intend using is running. We didn’t and it wasn’t.

Traveller hint #2: Don’t assume that because the bus company confirms that the last bus is running on your date of travel and that it goes as far as your destination, that this will be the case. It wasn’t – the late service has been discontinued. Sadly the company (Tanat Valley – have not updated their on-line timetable, so others may also find a £26 taxi will be required.

Getting to Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant

On the spur of the moment I decided to visit my aunt. She lives in the tiny village of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant in Mid/North Wales, where there is only one bus per day in each direction.

I needed to plan the connections with great care if I was to catch the sole bus into the village at 1:30

It’s a lovely little village with half a dozen shops and three pubs, and is famous for its waterfall, Pistyll Rhaeadr.

I had a lovely time with my aunt as well as seeing two of my many cousins. And all of the transport connections worked out perfectly!

Eating out on a Monday night shouldn’t be this hard!

NoFoodFinding somewhere to eat in North Wales’ villages on a Sunday or Monday evening is a bit iffy! Nothing available at the three Llanrhaeadr pubs tonight. We sat down in the only cafe in the village but struggled to find anything we fancied. One of the items we chose was no longer available and eventually we walked out.

The Green Inn, a few miles out of the village, was closed on Mondays. The Railway Inn, also a few miles out, didn’t do food on Monday or Tuesday evenings.

We resorted to buying some rolls and cheese slices from the village store and eating them in the Llangynog village car park.  The disappointment of the evening was increased when, after eating these delights, we realised the cheese had a ‘Best before’ date of a week ago! When we then called into the adjacent New Inn pub for a drink we found that they actually did do food on a Monday – but sadly we had already eaten!
