A last-minute decision to do a walk along along the Wey-Navigation from Shalford to Guildford and on to the wonderful Dapdune Wharf was thrown out the window when on walking to the station I realised that the first of the two trains was cancelled, ruling out the schedule I was working to. Persevering, I worked out a different route, involving two trains and a bus, only to have that ruined by persistent rain as I approached Guildford. Abandoning any thoughts of a decent walk, I walked through the rain from Guildford Station to Dapdune Wharf. A toastie and coffee at the very pleasant café, where there is a largish collection of books (3 bought) and then on to the bookshop shed (6 books bought) meant the day had turned out well after all.

Dapdune Wharf is a very small, National Trust site (it’s free) and has two bookshops, a café, a couple of exhibition areas and a boat trip. It’s only a half-mile walk from Guildford Station – go visit!
