• The Jook – Gary Phillips

The JookThe Jook by Gary Phillips is a pacy crime novel full of swearing, sex and extreme violence. Set around the world of American football, there are no likeable characters but the story keeps you hooked. Initially, the street-dialogue took some getting used to, but eventually I got the idea! At 250 pages, it’s a short and easy read and worth trying, though it won’t suit everyone’s taste!

Immediately prior to reading this book I had started and abandoned three books. I think I’ve been buying second-hand books somewhat indiscriminately, so in future I’ll try to go for quality rather than quantity!

  • Never Go Back – Lee Child

Never_go_back_by_lee_childNever Go Back by Lee Child is the third novel I have read by this author.

As with the previous books, I raced through it, reading the first 350 pages (of 500) on the same day! But then I couldn’t read for a couple of days, and on returning to the story I found I had lost the pace I had experienced on the first day, and by the end of the book I was losing interest.

The story is a glorified chase ending in an anti-climax. Our hero is invincible, threatens violence and uses violence. Strangely, the bad guys don’t carry guns, which I feel they would have found useful!

I will try to read my next Lee Child novel without breaks!

  • Nothing – Edited by Jeremy Webb

NothingNothing is a collection of articles from New Scientist based around the concept of ‘nothing’.

Some articles I found interesting, some less so, and some I didn’t understand. Anything to with numbers (zero in this case) is always interesting to me, as is anything about what existed before the big bang – don’t ask, I’m no clearer! There’s also an interesting article on why doing nothing is very bad for your health and of the huge benefits of doing even moderate exercise.

    A book that’s worth keeping and re-reading.

  • What a plonker (twice) and for the 2nd time

CaptureWe did the same thing 3 or 4 years ago. We closed the front door, leaving a key in the inside lock. Despite having another key, it’s not possible to open the door whilst there is a key in the inside lock.

    What a plonker.

The first time this happened I eventually managed to open the door using some technique through the letterbox – but this time I couldn’t remember how I did it. I thought of dislodging or turning the key through the letterbox but after a few pathetic attempts with a long tool I realised I was beaten and called out a locksmith.

A couple of hours later the locksmith opens the door in 10 seconds using a gadget similar to the one pictured. The gadget simply pushes down the inside handle. What a plonker – I should have been thinking handle and not key! I could have done that with something like an improvised coat hanger and I guess that is what I did the first time.

That’ll be £70 plus VAT, thank you very much. Lesson learned!!
