  • The reluctant voter

I had zero enthusiasm for voting for any of the parties in the local elections, but it was a nice evening and I cast my three votes for the least-worst party (Lib Dems). If there had been Green candidates my votes would have gone to them.

  • Bushy Park and some new boots

After four grey days we had a lovely, mainly sunny, day that deserved a walk through Bushy Park and the purchase of some new boots. The old boots are 10 years old, have tramped through New Zealand as well as numerous walks in the UK, but they are fit for the bin, and with walks along the Itchen Way lined up, a new pair became urgent.

  • Cricket is back

Much to our surprise, cricket has returned to our park after an absence of something like 10 years. When we first moved here there was hockey, cricket and football being played, but only football remains, and even this seemed to be tailing off. As far as I can tell, the sports pavilion lost its changing facilities to a nursery, which may have hastened the demise of organised park matches. So it’s a pleasure to see the return of cricket – and on a cold, grey, late-April afternoon, too!

  • The Saturday Times

The Saturday Times’ big crossword completed before the end of the afternoon, having resorted to Google just the once! (7 down: Poncho like garment = ruana)

  • Beast

What a terrific film Beast is, with a tremendous performance from Jessie Buckley in the leading role as a troubled young woman rebelling against a stifling home and mother. A thriller, with surprises right up until the end – go see it!

No sunshine is expected here until Tuesday, so one might as well be in the cinema. Three cheers to the Wimbledon Curzon for not dimming the lights during the adverts and trailers, which meant that I could read my novel!

The images in the TV documentary on Havana were so stunning I decided to photograph some of them!

  • The Itchen Way walk – stage 1

I started the first stage of the Itchen Way walk under the Itchen Bridge, having decided to skip the short section at the beginning of the Itchen Way between Weston Shore and the bridge. The images are in sequence from the start to the end of the walk at Eastleigh. It’s not a great walk and hopefully the other stages, from Eastleigh to the source of the River Itchen, will be more attractive / interesting. It was a very, very hot day for a 7 or 8 mile walk and took 4 hours.

[The graffiti was on a bridge on the walk!]
