Bushy Park

Walking around Bushy Park for over two hours on a gloriously sunny, Autumn day, followed by lunch at The Mute Swan and tea at the Lion Gate Café. Perfect.

Sutton 0 – 0 Yeovil

Outplayed in the first half by a well-drilled Yeovil team, Sutton were fortunate to be level at half-time. Sutton played better and had the edge in the second half, but the final score reflected a game which neither side deserved to win.

Sutton 3 – 2 Ebbsfleet

1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2 and nearly 3-3 in the last minute. A game between two very poor sides. The Sutton players looked aimless, lethargic even. It’s going to be an up and down season, though unlikely to be promoted or relegated.

My Favourite Cake

My Favourite Cake is delightful, Iranian film about old-age and loneliness, set within the context of Iranian society. Beautifully acted by the two leads, for some it may be a bit slow, but this really is a very, fine film. And yes, the acting is truly wonderful.
Go see it!

Second-hand bookshops

The Book Guide – what a find! A great site for locating second-hand bookshops. OK it’s a bit of a clunky site but the information appears comprehensive and is kept up to date. Click on the image below to open the site in a new window.
Interestingly the comments in the entry for the Dorking Oxfam Bookshop confirm what I discovered today in a phone call to the shop – the bookshop is closed and is being integrated into the Oxfam shop further down the road. This doesn’t sound promising – I’ll pay a visit in due course.
Not all bookshops within National Trust properties make an appearance in the guide, though the wonderful Dapdune Wharf near Guildford (NT membership not required!) does.

Sutton 0 – 3 Boston

Some shambolic defending resulted in a deserved thumping from a bright opposition. Rarely (never?) have I left a game before the end, but at 0-3 and with 15 minutes of normal time remaining (there was probably going to be 10 minutes injury/extra time) I left in despair. I was in two minds as to whether to go to the game as I’m struggling to recover from a bad covid experience. I should have listened to my body.

Celia Fremlin

I found this new reprint from Faber of a Celia Fremlin novel, one I hadn’t read. Most of her books are out of print and I’ve only managed to find a few second-hand or library books. It looks as if Faber may be reprinting other novels. Yippee!
This new book is every bit as wonderful as the others I’ve read. She’s my favourite author!
These are the ones I’ve read and not read.

Sutton 2 – 2 York City

It was a horrid, wet day and I was hesitant about going to the match (I bought the online ticket 45 minutes before kick-off!). It was raining getting there and for much of the first half so I was a bit wet, but I’m glad I went as it was a fine, competitive game. It’s early days but I would guess that both teams could finish the season in the top 6 of the National League.

Sutton 5 – 0 Altrincham

For 20 minutes I’m thinking this is not good. Then in the next 20 minutes there’s 4 goals – unbelievable! It was as if a different Sutton team were on the pitch. A dead second-half brought a fifth goal near the end. I don’t think the Sutton players could believe what had happened and the supporters were happy to get a big win at the start of the season.
